Scrapyard Scene: Lionel NY Transit Museum Christmas Display

Diorama or a diesel locomotive being dismantled

Yard workers are busily dismanelting this old Santa Fe Alco Locomotive in the gritter part of town.

The guy up front is removing the name boards, while the figure on the left is using a cutting torch to cut away other parts from the remains of the scrapped diesel. Other tools and assorted junk lie in the dust around the old locomotive. The green hoses running from the lower hosing are a nice touch.

Although many of the scenes at the New York Transit Musueum display were custom built, this is actually a stock item available in the Lionel Catalog. Lionel offers a variety of locomotive paint schemes to choose from, so you could add whatever junked locomotive you choose. The NYC Scrap Yard version is available from Amazon. Of course you could also scratch build your own scrapyard from a left over locomotive.

Either way, I think the scrap yard scene adds a lot of interest to any railroad exhibit.
